Book Recap

Good Spirits* by B.K. Borison is a fun Christmas romance and a retelling of A Christmas Carol, and it’s the first book in the Ghosted series. Nolan is the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Harriet is the woman he’s supposed to visit. The catch? Harriet is not Scrooge. She loves Christmas and life in general, and that sets up a story full of ghosts, time travel, tension, and a whole lot of self-reflection.

Let’s talk about it…

If you are a fan of A Christmas Carol and you love holiday romances, Good Spirits is one you definitely don’t want to skip. It’s a fun, cute, whimsical romance that made me smile over and over again, and I absolutely recommend this Christmas story.

I originally picked up this book because I had friends who were raving about B.K. Borison‘s writing, so I was like, I’m going to need to check this out for myself. I also always pick up just a few Christmas romances during the holiday season, and I’m so glad that I chose this one.

The Audiobook Is a Must-Listen

I actually listened to the audiobook, and I found that the narration was really great for the characters. Will M. Watt is captivating as Nolan. He has this wonderful accent that brings Nolan to life and just envelops that Christmas spirit you would expect from the Ghost of Christmas Past. And then you have Karissa Vacker‘s portrayal of Harriet. She really captures Harriet’s whimsical nature and the fun that Harriet has with Christmas and life in general.

The dual narration also makes it really easy to keep up with whose point of view you’re in and what is happening with the characters. It was a great experience, and I would really recommend it to any audiobook listeners. If you’re doing some holiday travel, cleaning, or decorating, just pop it on. It’s going to get you in the holiday spirit, that is for sure.

A Romance-Driven Plot Done to Perfection

I will say that the story wasn’t deep. This is a very surface level Christmas romance, and for a Christmas romance to work, it doesn’t have to be super deep. I was able to easily follow the plot, and the romance really drove that plot forward.

So while this is a very romance-focused book, it was done in a way that continued to advance the storyline and kept a lot of traditional nods towards A Christmas Carol. If you’re there to piece together which parts of this story are actually a nod to the original, there are plenty of things for you to find as a reader. There are also several funny moments, and there was a great twist to the story, even though it’s something that’s going to feel very familiar to you as a reader.

Harriet Is Not Scrooge

If you’re not somebody who loves A Christmas Carol, you can still enjoy this story. Scrooge’s story is a classic one, don’t get me wrong, but Harriet is not Scrooge. I think that’s a nice modern twist to the storyline.

And the banter between Harriet and Nolan just really brings out the best in these two characters. It’s a big part of what makes this retelling such a distinct story from the original. Honestly, I think I may have kicked my feet in a few areas because it was just such a fun, cute, whimsical romance.

The Ghosted Series: What Comes Next

If you are somebody who likes a series, Good Spirits* is the first book in the Ghosted series. The sequel, Grim Tidings*, was just released in September of 2026, and you better believe that it will be a book on my shelf very shortly. I am so excited to pick it up and read it.

I know it’s going to have some high expectations to follow up Good Spirits, but I am very hopeful, based on the storyline, that it is going in a direction that I’m going to like.

Who Should Read Good Spirits?

I absolutely recommend this Christmas story. Pick up Good Spirits by B.K. Borison if you:

  • Love A Christmas Carol and want a fresh, modern take on it
  • Are a paranormal romance reader looking for something festive
  • Want a cozy, whimsical holiday romance that doesn’t have to be super deep
  • Like your romance on the spicy side (several open door scenes)
  • Listen to audiobooks, because the dual narration is so good

If you’re looking for a heavy, deep story, this one keeps things lighter, and that’s exactly what I wanted from a Christmas romance.
