5 Proven Strategies to Combat Overwhelm in Your Pharmacy Career

Pharmacists play a crucial role in healthcare, but the demands of the profession can lead to feelings of overwhelm which, if left unmanaged, can lead to burnout. It's essential to address these feelings proactively to maintain both personal well-being and professional effectiveness. Here are five strategies to help pharmacists overcome overwhelm and find balance in their demanding careers.

1. Identifying Triggers of Overwhelm

The first step in managing overwhelm is to identify its triggers. You can’t address a problem, if you don’t know where it is coming from. Common triggers for pharmacists include high patient volumes with low staffing levels, frequent interruptions, and administrative tasks. By keeping a journal or using a tracking app to note when and why you feel overwhelmed, you can begin to identify patterns. Understanding your triggers allows you to anticipate and mitigate them, giving you greater control over your work environment and emotional responses.

2. Breaking Tasks into Manageable Chunks

Large, complex tasks can contribute significantly to feelings of overwhelm. To combat this, break tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. Use tools like to-do lists or project management apps to organize and prioritize your work. Tackling one small task at a time can make your workload seem less daunting and more achievable, reducing stress and increasing productivity.

3. Practicing Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques

In the midst of a busy day, taking time to practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques can make a significant difference. Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness meditation can help reduce stress and improve focus. Even a few minutes of these practices can provide a mental reset, helping you to approach your tasks with a clearer mind and calmer demeanor. I personally, love a quick box breathing exercise to relax and re-focus during my shift.

4. Seeking Support from Peers and Mentors

No pharmacist should feel like they have to face their challenges alone. Seeking support from peers and mentors can provide valuable insights and emotional relief. Regularly connecting with colleagues for discussions, advice, and shared experiences can foster a sense of community and reduce feelings of isolation. Mentors, in particular, can offer guidance and strategies based on their own experiences, helping you navigate the complexities of the profession. This is one of the reasons I created the Happy Pharmacist Collective to help provide peer support and group coaching to pharmacists who are experiencing or want to prevent burnout. If you are interested in joining the community, you can apply here.

5. Setting Boundaries

One of the most effective ways to prevent overwhelm is by setting clear boundaries between work and personal life. This can include scheduling regular breaks, limiting overtime, and ensuring you have time for self-care and relaxation. It's important to communicate your boundaries to colleagues and supervisors, so they understand and respect your need for balance. Setting boundaries without guilt allows you to maintain your well-being and be more effective in your professional role.

Overcoming overwhelm as a pharmacist requires a proactive approach and a variety of strategies. By identifying your triggers, breaking tasks into manageable chunks, practicing relaxation techniques, seeking support, and setting boundaries, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling professional life. Sierra Richard, PharmD, BCPPS

I’m an investigational drug service clinical pharmacist specialist, a board certified pediatric pharmacy specialist, and a pharmacy preceptor, but I’m also a content creator, a wife, a cat and bird momma, and multi-passionate human being! (seriously, ask me about the geysers of Yellowstone or how NASA is sending humans back to the moon!)

I discovered that pharmacy could give me a lot in life, but it couldn’t give me a happy life on its own so I created a life I love and I am helping you do the same.
