Prescription for Burnout: 3 Overlooked Causes of Pharmacist Burnout

Burnout is multifactorial. We know that there are many causes of burnout that are all intertwined in a messy web. Healthcare is filled with legislative restrictions that can make it difficult to do our jobs, which is often tied to reimbursement, if that reimbursement decreases it can impact how many people can be hired, and if there are staffing shortages but the work load remains the same then those who remain are at higher risk of burnout. Maybe you have seen this scenario happen before. Maybe it’s even happened to you. Regardless, burnout is a complicated problem to solve with many causes to look into.

Some of these cause, like staff shortages, get a lot of attention (as they should because not having enough people to take care of patients is not only a burnout risk but a patient safety concern), but that doesn't mean there aren't other factors that can increase your risk of burnout as well. In this video podcast episode, I highlight some of the hidden causes of burnout that impact pharmacists across various sectors each and every day.

I’m an investigational drug service clinical pharmacist specialist, a board certified pediatric pharmacy specialist, and a pharmacy preceptor, but I’m also a content creator, a wife, a cat and bird momma, and multi-passionate human being! (seriously, ask me about the geysers of Yellowstone or how NASA is sending humans back to the moon!)

I discovered that pharmacy could give me a lot in life, but it couldn’t give me a happy life on its own so I created a life I love and I am helping you do the same.
